A GUIDE TO PROM DRESSES

It is February once again, and I just feel the love intensified a hundred folds as people start to talk about Valentines Day. For now, I do not have any plans for Vday, and I definitely don't wanna worry about it too much. But aside from Valentines day, February is also the start of Prom Season!

Yes, Prom---one of the highlights of our high school life. While I do not have a lot to share about my good 'ol prom days, I know for sure that a lot of you guys have a lot of memorable things to reminisce, like your prom date, your first prom dance, the prom king and queen crown you received (lucky you!), and of course, the sometimes stressful-sometimes fun hunt for the perfect Prom Dress.

I have had a lot of clients already looking for their ideal prom dresses be made as early as now, coz most proms are held during February (usually near Valentines Day). And this blog post is my simple way of helping you guys decide on which Prom Dress you should buy or have made for yourself.

To lessen the hassle and trouble in finding the perfect prom dress for you, you have to keep in mind four (4) important key-points of what the dress should be: (1)  AGE-APPROPRIATE , (2) THEME APPROPRIATE, (3) COMFORTABLE, and lastly (4) FIT TO YOUR PERSONALITY

Firstly, you should keep in mind that your dress should ALWAYS be AGE APPROPRIATE. During prom, it is perfectly fine to dress up and try to look lady-like, but you should not pick a dress which takes away the youth in you. It is important that you still look fresh, young and glowing. After all, it;s a party for young people---go celebrate being young and beautiful.

Aside from looking age-appropriate, your dress should also be THEME-APPROPRIATE. Most prom nights nowadays are defined by a certain theme such as Old Hollywood Glam, or Fantasy Ball Theme or perhaps a Grand Masquerade Prom Ball. And in this case, you wouldn't want to be wear something out of theme, like you do not totally belong. Keep in mind the theme of the event, but do not literally cling too much on the theme as you may end up wearing something which looks more like a costume than a prom dress. A fairy themed party does not mean you need to wear fairy wings and a wand.

Third and one of the most important thing to keep in mind is the COMFORT level of the dress you are going to wear. There are lots of dresses out there but definitely not the most comfortable and easy to wear. You definitely would't want to spend the night in pain because of the tight fit, or because of the heavy train, or the spikes turning up and hitting right on your armpits. (ouch!) For comfortable dresses, choose the ones which are made of light and breezy fabrics. Also, make sure that the fit of the dress is perfect for your body, preferably with just the right amount of extra centimeters just in case you end up drinking too much juice or eating too much finger food during the night. :)

And speaking of comfort, the last thing you need to consider in choosing the perfect prom dress for you is your PERSONALITY. You should be comfortable in wearing the dress infront of many people. You should be wearing it because you really like it and not because some people or a certain magazine told you that it is pretty even if you do not really see yourself in it. Are you a rocker chic? Go ahead and wear that edgy black dress you have always wanted but never had the right event to do so. Are you that prim and proper princess kind of girl? Go ahead and wear that pretty pink lace gown you have always wanted to wear eversince you saw it in fashion tv. Wear what your heart really wants and and it will sure boost up your confidence. And as they say, the perfect dress is nothing without confidence to go along with it.

Now with all those tips on hand, you are set to finding the perfect prom dress for you. And here are some few other style and trends of dresses to help you with in deciding which type of dress you should buy.

THE SWEETHEART.

A fab way to achieve that sweet and young look but still looking ultra glam is by wearing a dress with a sweetheart neckline. It is also a nice way to show off a nice pair of dangling earrings or a beautiful jewel necklace.

ONE-SHOULDER DRESS

If you have amazing shoulders, I suggest you wear a one-shoulder dress. It highlights your shoulder blades and it is an amazing dress cut for all body types, whether you are skinny of full bodied. With this type of dress, you also do not need to wear necklace anymore (saves you from buying accessories), just a nice bracelet or a cute drop earrings and you are good to go.

SHORT DRESS

If you do not quite feel like wearing long gowns, you can always wear short dresses (only if allowed), but since it is for a special (sometimes formal) event, be sure that your dress is extra special. Since your dress lacks in the fabric department, make sure it is well compensated in terms of design and overall appeal---that little dash or sparkle, or sequins, or lace or applique can certainly up the glam factor of a short dress. Wearing short dresses also highlights your beautiful legs, if you are blessed with one. I also suggest short dresses for girls who are short, it tends to make their legs look longer and more slender, if paired with nice perfect heels.

PRINCESS TRAIN

However, if you are not exactly comfortable in wearing a short dress for prom, but you want to show off your nice legs or that amazing pair of shoes you bought online, you can wear a dress cut short in the front but has a long train at the back. Not only it is spot-on trend at the moment but it also gives that very princess-like feel to your entire look.

RED LADY

If you are aiming to look striking and get noticed on your prom night, there is no other way but to wear RED. Red is the perfect color for beauty, drama and glam. One great thing about wearing a red dress is that you can already downplay your make-up. Be careful though, when wearing red, be sure the fabric is not too shiny, not stiff and not too heavy. I prefer red dresses in soft and flowy material, it softens the strong color of the dress.

FULL SKIRT

One sure way to be a stand-out on your prom night is to wear a dress with a full skirt. It may be a full ball-skirt gown or maybe a full tulle skirt. This kind of dress is perfect for a formal prom party or for a prom ball. However, if you are slightly on the full-bodied category, I do not suggest this type of gown for you. the full skirt will just make you look fuller and even shorter.

BURST OF COLOR

Now if you have a very colorful personality, and you certainly want it to reflect on your dress, there is no other way but to wear a dress with a bright hue---bright enough to add a splash of personality, but not too much to overpower and wear you out the entire evening. Try colors which are rather unexpected and not too common for that added happy surprise factor.

RUFFLES AND LACES

Certainly, ruffles and laces are perfect accents on a dress. They add a touch of elegance, femininity and class to any dress. And if placed on the right position on the dress, it will certainly flatter anyone wearing it.

GRECIAN DRAPES

One of the best no-fail dress styles is the Grecian Drape. It creates a womanly feel to entire look. If you are aiming to achieve that Goddess-like look during prom night, this style of dress is definitely for you. And you'll sure to catch the eyes of dashing handsome gladiators and warrior princes of the night.

THE CLASSIC

The tube-top dress is the most common and classic style during prom. However, it does not mean it should look very common and unattractive as well. Tube-top dresses are perfect to accentuate your shoulders (best when ornate with lovely jewelry). This may be not too flattering to flat chested girls, but with the right details on the bust part/tube-top part of the dress, it can bring your look to the next level. Try these tube-top dresses below:

THE LOW-V

Sexy and provocative, this type of dress is perfect for those who would like to highlight the shoulder and neck part. It may be a little bit too sexy for some, but there are still dresses with low-v neckline which does not look too sexy and tacky. When wearing this type of dress, it helps to have a double sided tape handy. :)

BEAUTY UNDER YOUR SLEEVES

Now this may not be the most commonly seen type of dress during proms, but this is certainly one good alternative of looking different from the rest. This dress also helps those who have "something to hide" on their arms, be it a scar from an accident, or burnt skin from the beach, or perhaps a tattoo. I find dresses with sleeves very lady-like and elegant.

There are lots of other styles of dresses out there and it's now on you to search for the perfect dress for your prom. I hope this post helped you in a way or two. Good luck on your dress hunt, and I wish you a happy and beautiful prom night.

Also remember, the dress is not what prom night is all about. It is important to have the perfect prom dress, but it is most important to have the perfect date, the perfect set of friends to enjoy the night with, and the perfect happy beautiful aura that glows from within. :)
